TESP-ExTO is a 16-day summer program designed for international participants and students of Tohoku University to collaborate and learn together about the future society of Japan and the Tohoku region. The program includes a series of lectures, group projects, and fieldwork activities, all conducted in English by experienced faculty members from the School of Engineering. In the group project, participants will create YouTube videos to showcase the attractions and challenges of Japan and the Tohoku region to the world. We will also invite an active leader in related fields as a visiting lecturer. We welcome students from around the world who are eager to explore the Tohoku region, Miyagi prefecture, and the city of Sendai. This will help deepen their sociological and cultural understanding. This is an exciting opportunity to experience a vibrant summer in Sendai, Japan.

Course Fee

Partner institutions*: 170,000 JPY Non partner institutions: 200,000 JPY

The fee covers accommocation, cultural & social activities, and field trips. Participants are responsible for daily meals, local transportation, airfare, and insurance. The tuition, experimental materials are supported by Tohoku University.

Teaching and working methods

ExTO consists of lectures, group projects, and a tour to Miyagi prefecture (tentative).

Group Project

Participants will choose a topic based on ideas from the lectures and work in mixed groups with the Tohoku University local students on a project. The group project will be to create a Youtube video that tells the story of Tohoku, Miyagi, and Sendai. A presentation session to report the process and conclusion of the group project with playing the made Youtube clips is scheduled on the final day of the program. Selective from the following topics:
